At the Chop-Shop -- MIMOSA 6, IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE, PRAYER FLAGS & PALM FRONDS SILHOUETTE SMALL

I've posted before about my tendency to cut up stencils that are stained as result of earlier art projects, then use them in collage on canvas.  Well, I've done it again ...

To create the frame on this 12" x 12" stretched canvas, I used Golden High Flow acrylics and the following stencils:

Mimosa 6 (6" x 6")

It's a Jungle Out There (9" x 12")

Prayer Flags (9" x 12")

Palm Fronds Silhouette Small (6" x 6")

I covered the central area of the canvas with a layer of Titanium White acrylic paint, to provide a bright white background for the cut-up, stained stencils.  Once the paint was dry, I used gel matte medium to add the stencil bits -- except for Palm Fronds Silhouette Small, which I used in its entirety.

With the exception of Mimosa 6, the stained pieces that became collage elements are all of the stencils listed above.

The cut-up stencils used in today's post looked like this, originally --

And Mimosa 6, used in making the border, looks like this:

Mimosa 6 measures 6" x 6" and has a big cousin measuring 9" x 12" --

Nancy Sanderson Curry and HOT AIR BALLOON & MASK

Nancy Curry -- one of my fellow-stencil designers at StencilGirl.com -- has once again delighted me in her use of one of my stencils in her series of artworks created with Citrasolv prints.  (Be sure to catch up with Nancy here.)

This time, Nancy has used one of my two Hot Air Balloon Stencils and Masks, which in their entirety look like this --

Note:  Both the 6"x 6" Stencil-and-Mask set and the Mini 4" x 4" Stencil-and-Mask set look like the image above.  The only difference is in size.  Outer dimensions of the larger set are 6"x 6" -- this includes both a stencil and a mask.  Likewise, the outer dimensions of the mini set are 4"x 4" -- and that 4"x 4" sheet of Mylar contains both a stencil and a mask.  Sizes of each individual stencil and each mask are correspondingly smaller than the outer sizes of 6" x 6" and 4" x 4".

Below is the view shown at StencilGirl.com --

In the above alternate view, the mask is shown on the far right.  The set arrives with the mask still in place, cozily next to the stencil.  It's made to be removed very easily.

Nancy's choice in this case was the 4" x 4" version -- Mini Hot Air Balloon and Mask.  Hers artwork is so gorgeous, I want to clap in hearty applause!

Stencil Prints on Canvas and Paper -- GARDEN MONTAGE and other Stencils

Several days ago, I posted photos of some 9" x 12" stretched canvases that I'd painted using Garden Montage, my recently released 9" x 12" stencil at StencilGirl.

Another canvas in that series is now in progress....

It's not finished yet, but, so far, I'm liking this departure from the colors I'd been using on earlier pieces in this series.  Like the earlier versions, this one started with an all-over print created with Garden MontageAfter that layer had been covered with two coats of zinc white (translucent) acrylic paint, I began adding layers of green and gold acrylic paints, using my 9" x 12" stencil Queen Anne's Lace.  I also added some white spray paint, to mute out areas that I no longer wanted.

Below is a print that started life as a print made with Ornamental Iron Curls, one of my 6" x 6" stencils --

-- and that original print is still somewhat visible thru the print made over it; this new print was laid down with Garden Montage stencil.

While making prints for the announcement of this new stencil release, I quickly came to see that I especially liked the Garden Montage prints that were made over earlier prints that had emerged when I'd used my 9" x 12" stencil Prayer Flags --

-- and the photo above shows yet another of these prints.  I like the contrast between the rigid geometric shapes of Prayer Flags and the curving, organic shapes that form Garden Montage.  With the above print, my goal was to maximize this contrast by using colors that are near-opposites on the color wheel.

Below is another print using the same approach; this time, on a starting background of foreign newsprint.  Prayer Flags was used in making the partial print, in purple, on the right.  Garden Montage and opaque green paint formed the top layer --

The print below was made on an old sheet of copy paper that I'd computer-printed with a pattern of faint grey speckles --

GARDEN MONTAGE 9" x 12" Stencil is Still Making Art!

Above:  This print was made on an old picture calendar page.

So begins another of my daily posts following the release of my newest 9" x 12" stencil, Garden Montage....

Above:  Garden Montage was used over an older print that'd been made with my 9" x 12" stencil Buds.

Bright colors!

GARDEN MONTAGE 9" x 12" Stencil in Use, Continued ...

Today's greeting card was, like others recently shown here, created with a print made with my new 9" x 12" stencil, Garden Montage.

But this time, the wooden heart embellishment was made simply by pushing the unfinished heart down onto a disposable foam plate that I'd been using to mix paint.  It was a quick, easy way to avoid wasting leftover paint!

More prints made with Garden Montage --

Above:  This print was made atop an earlier print that had been created with my 9" x 12" stencil Nosegay.

More Prints Created with GARDEN MONTAGE (9" x 12") Stencil

I started this series announcing the release of Garden Montage by showing a few of its prints made on assorted background papers.

Today I'll post more of those papers --

Above:  The background paper was a sheet of scrapbook paper pre-printed with butterflies.

Above:  The background paper was an old paper once printed using my 9" x 12" stencil Buds.  That print's dark green (nearly black) lines and shapes are still somewhat visible.

Above:  A simple collage created with two Garden Montage prints.

Above:  The background paper was a sheet of French newspaper; this paper had been printed, earlier, using my 6" x 6" stencil Pavilion Shadows.  Its slanting lines remain somewhat visible.

Above:  The background paper was an old paper previously printed with my Prayer Flags 9" x 12" stencil.   That print's purple lines and shapes remain visible thru the translucent green paint used with Garden Montage .

GARDEN MONTAGE 9" x 12" Stencil Used on Stretched Canvases

Garden Montage, my newest 9" x 12" stencil, has landed into my hands as I've worked on several 9" x 12" stretched canvases.

Above:  this artwork was created with Garden Montage teamed with inks and high-flow acrylic paints.

Above:  this artwork is collage and acrylic:  Its background was created with Garden Montage and its foreground is part of the stencil itself, stained with acrylic paints and inks.

The next two, below, are the same canvas; its white background was made with Garden Montage (9" x 12") stencil and the purple foreground was made with Queen Anne's Lace (9" x 12") stencil.

Next, I painted over the purple print with a layer of zinc white acrylic --which, being translucent -- allowed the combined background layers to remain faintly visible.  After the white layer of paint dried, I again used Queen Anne's Lace , this time with acrylic paint (shown below.)

Today's final photo shows a canvas that was created in somewhat similar ways to two canvases shown above.

This time, the background was created with Garden Montage stencil; then, after it had been coated with a layer of zinc white acrylic paint, I collaged onto the surface the stencil itself -- after it's been stained with acrylic inks and high-flow acrylic paints ....

GARDEN MONTAGE (9" x 12") Stencil Co-Stars with FANTASIA (9" x 12") and SPRIGS (6" x 6") Stencils

Today's post brings more greeting cards made with collages I've created using prints from my newest 9" x 12" stencil, Garden Montage --

Although today's art samples happen to be greeting cards, they can also work for covers of art journals, scrapbook pages, gift-tags, bookmarks -- and lots more that you'll think of, on your own!

The 3 art samples above were made -- for the most part -- using prints created with Garden Montage; but here and there, I also used a blue-and-white print made with Sprigs (6" x 6") stencil and Fantasia (9" x 12") stencil.

On the greeting card below, I went back to using only prints made with
Garden MontageThis includes the stencil-printed paper that decorates the wooden heart embellishment --

In its entirety, Sprigs (6" x 6") stencil looks like this --

Fantasia (9" x 12") stencil looks like this, in its entirety --

More Art Made with Brand-New Stencil GARDEN MONTAGE from STENCILGIRL

Above is the first in a series of greeting card covers decorated with collage using cut-up prints I'd made with my just-released 9" x 12" stencil Garden Montage.

These wooden heart embellishments were likewise decorated with papers cut from these prints.

More appear below ...

More art samples created with my just-released stencil Garden Montage will be posted here tomorrow!

Meanwhile, below are two nearly-full-size printed papers of the kind that I've cut into pieces while assembling my collages.

GARDEN MONTAGE -- My Newest Stencil is Released Today!

Today a new 9" x 12" stencil of mine is released at StencilGirl!

You can find it as the very first stencil shown here.

I surprised myself with how much fun I had using Garden Montage  stencil to make prints on an assortment of background papers ...

I had even more fun when I cut the prints into pieces to collage together on greeting cards --

Please click on the image above as well as the image below, to better see details.

But I wasn't done yet!

After making the greeting cards shown above -- all of them embellished with wooden hearts that I had decorated eons ago -- I decided that I wanted to create a new batch of heart-embellishments, this time with these newly printed papers.

I started with the unfinished wooden hearts shown below, along with a collection of stencil-printed papers; most of these papers were the new prints created with Garden Montage.  Many of these prints had already been cut into small pieces as I'd assembled the collaged greeting cards.  These assorted-size wooden hearts are available at craft stores like Michael's and A.C. Moore.  Similar hearts are sold by a variety of vendors thru AmazonSmile, but as far as I can tell, none of these online sources offers the thinnest hearts, which are best for greeting card covers.  The hearts I had bought at A.C. Moore or Michaels are about 1/16 inch thick.

Above:  assorted stencil-printed papers and some unfinished wooden hearts.

Above:  Here I'm pairing a heart with a stencil-printed paper scrap that fits it.

Above:  adding glue to the back of the paper scrap. I use Pioneer Embellishment Glue Stick.

Above: Here I've pressed the wooden heart down onto the glued side of the paper.

Above:  assorted sizes of wooden hearts are pressed to glued backs of paper scraps.

Above and below:  Two ways to trim the edges, after the glue has had time to dry; above:  a cutting board and an Exacto knife; below, fine-detail-cutting scissors.

Above:  I used an emery board to smooth the trimmed edges.

Above:  an assortment of ready-to-use heart embellishments.

Although today's art samples happen to be greeting cards, these hearts (and these collages) also work beautifully on covers of art journals, scrapbook pages, gift-tags, bookmarks, etc. I'm sure you can come up with more and better decorating ideas of your own!
