Get out Your Fabric or Paper for Making Sun-Prints!

Artist Elise Bky has created gorgeous sun-print fabric art with a number of stencils including my 6"x6" Quilted Flower Garden...

Another Canvas in Progress

Today's post is a continuation of an earlier post, which showed a 9"x12" canvas; today's post shows an 8"x10" canvas that I worked on, alongside the bigger piece. 

I'll start by showing 3 close-ups:

Directly above is the canvas as it appears now, in its entirety.  Altho I've already signed it, I've decided it's not finished.  I'm going to turn it "upside-down" and develop it further.

To provide some background info:

My method for developing this piece started with the "stencil-and-stain" technique that was part of the members-only StencilClub package of June 2015.   To receive this package (which includes a video showing the technique in action, as well as the 3-part stencil-set Crop Circles) just visit StencilGirlTalk.com -- and use the right side bar to become a StencilClub member.   Once a member, send an email to stencilgirlproducts@gmail.com, citing the month-and-year package that you want to buy; then, StencilGirlProducts will provide you with a invoice through PayPal.

After laying a foundation with that technique, I added several layers of acrylic liquid paints, and followed that with using a white Sakura Solid Marker.

New Work...Old Technique

Below is a 9"x12" canvas that's still in progress, but it's far enough along to be shown, along with some close-ups of its surface; I'll start with the close-ups:

Above is the piece in its entirety.  It will be finished after I add deeper, darker orange above and below the green-blue focal point in the upper right.  I will also enhance the focal area by gluing on part of a stencil that was stained while working on this project.  (The "stencil-and-stain" method leaves stencils pretty much permanently stained.)

Spotlight on Bonnie Kittelson

Along with other stencils, artist Bonnie Kittelson has used two of my 9"x12" stencils in making a series of Gelli Plate prints:

The Sketchbook Project -- Opportunity for Art Journaling Enthusiasts

Mary C. Nasser is one of many who happily participate in a project that came to my notice when my friend (and stepdaughter) Christina gave me a book -- The Sketchbook Project World Tour -- about this art journal and sketchbook collection/library in Brooklyn, NY:

It's more than just a library local to Brooklyn, as you can see by visiting the webpages linked to the project's homepage above.  The project encompasses a number of programs, including a traveling library that takes portions of the collection beyond the walls of the main library.

Participation in the project comes with a fee; the project's goal is to display art journals and sketchbooks from a wide range and variety of participants.  It's open to everyone.

Mary C. Nasser's 9"x12" MAPS STENCIL in Action after Plastic Surgery

Here are the photos I promised!

This collage-in-progress shows part of Mary's stencil (coated in gold acrylic metallic paint) -- just picture it without the pieces of green masking tape.

MAP STENCIL Magic, thanks to Mary C Nasser!

Here's a short story about omelets and a 9"x12" stencil by Mary C. Nasser ...

At the risk of making some people wince, moan and turn pale as I bring up this subject again, the abiding fact is this:  I long ago decided that, to end up with an omelet, you have to break some eggs.

What has this to do with Mary's Map Stencil? 

I think it opens up wonderful creative avenues -- pun intended -- when  you take a leap of faith and start cutting up stained stencils for use as collage pieces.

Mary's gorgeous brand-new stencil emerges from the laser looking like this...



... but ages ago, after I had used it in an art project with thick metallic gold acrylic paint, the stencil became so beautifully coated that I decided (1) I would never clean it and (2) one day I would cut it up.

That day has come.

In this close-up of a mixed-media collage-in-progress, I've highlighted three areas that started life as a Gelli Plate print on Yupo.  After cutting this print into pieces of assorted shapes and sizes, I've been using them in collage.  The original print was made with my 9"x12" Mimosa stencil:

This design also comes in a 6"x6" version, Mimosa 6.

Pamela Levingston does Magic with PRAYER FLAGS

With One Stencil is the title of this beautiful double-page art journal spread created by artist Pamela Levingston-- 

I'm happy to say that the one stencil she chose was my 9"x12" stencil Prayer Flags--

Pamela's artwork shows a wonderful layered blend of complimentary colors, creating a sense of depth and mystery.  Many thanks, Pamela, for letting me show your artwork!


 

Leaf it to Sherry Canino!

Artist Sherry Canino has been playing with the new small round Gelli Plate.  To my delight, she chose to use one of the feathers from my 9"x12" Feathers 9 stencil, which in its entirety looks like this: 

Sherry chose to use just the tip of one of the feathers, because to her, this feather-tip looks like a leaf.   Her results are dazzling -- almost luminescent --

PRAYER FLAGS and a Smaller Stencil by another StencilGirl Artist, Daniella Woolf

I've been at it again -- cutting up stained stencils and using them as collage elements.  Below are three close-ups, followed by a shot of the canvas in its entirety:

After using that technique to lay in a background on today's artwork, I used heavy matte medium to add cut-outs from my 9"x12 stencil Prayer Flags, as well as cut-outs from Seoul Night by Daniella Woolf.   The third close-up, right above the shot of the artwork in its entirety, shows a large (white) part of Daniella's lovely stencil.
